Status: in progress
Repair start date: 03/09/2026
Cost estimate: LKR 648,500.00
In addition to above, we are assessing a project to build a retaining wall beside one of the school buildings, where floodwaters washed away the sandbag barrier that previously protected the structure. We are estimating costs and determining the proper government approvals, and financial pathways to carry out the construction responsibly and transparently.
Construction logistics:
Our local contact reached out to the Ministry of Education to identify schools requiring post‑flood support. Based on their guidance, several schools were identified. We started with this school as it was heavily impacted.
We then contacted the school principal directly to understand the specific needs and obtain preliminary estimates.
The principal, together with the school development committee, agreed to coordinate the work and manage on‑site planning.
Funds are being transferred to the principal as needed, and the project is now progressing in phases under their supervision.
Phases:
Electrical repairs - complete
Pavement replacement - complete
Roof repairs - in progress
Install class separator - complete
Replace 2 doors - not started
Repair entrance pathway to school - cancelled [evaluated and determined not essential for now]
Repair steps Outside - not started
Repair water supply - complete
Install retaining wall - being assessed
[this is a significant cost and we expect the government to handle these larger projects. Will continue to monitor the need here]
